Paris, first class, with another $5000 in Amex traveler checks for
a week of fun…the details of this sweeps are in out listing column.
According to web traffic tracker Media Matrix, sweepstakes players
are swarming Publisher's Clearinghouse's site (PCH.com). Their recent
traffic rise is a result of heavy traditional marketing such as television…the
huge web audience pleaser is the $1million sweepstakes being offered
online, where the winner will be named live during a commercial on
August 24th. The live commercial will be run sometime during NBC's
Nightly News with Tom Brokow. Since 1967 PCH has given away over $158,000,000
in prizes.
Aging baby boomers are using the web for online sweepstakes, this
according to a recent study by Greenfield Online's Surfing Digital
Consumer group. Greenfield states that from a survey of 3,000 boomers
55 years and older that 90% participate in cyber sweepstakes and contests.
Does that mean 90% of those 55 and older who have web access or 90%
of a random 3000 seniors? Inquiring minds want to know, as 90% is
very high…

Did you know that in 1999, industry executives reported that the number
of magazine subscriptions generated from sweepstakes was down almost
60%? Hit hardest was the scandal plagued American Family Enterprise.
Did you know that some publishing companies on the average rely on
sweepstakes for up to 30% of their total subscriptions? Most publishers
don't make a profit of these first time subscribers since who are
also paying a reduced rate. It's in the second year when a subscriber
renews at a higher rate when a publisher may show a profit.
The Discover Canada contest where the winners will be sent on a vacation
getaway (for two) to Eastern or Western Canada ends September 7, 2000.
To enter, visit their web site at www.samonsitetravelexpo.com. We
discovered this sweeps in New Yorker Magazine hidden on promotion
page. New Yorker also runs their own sweeps, check out it out www.newyorker.com.
Did you also know that the Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement
Act went into effect April 10th of this year? The new law strictly
prohibits false representations in sweepstakes promotion, such as
calling you a "winner" before you even entered; that you have to order
something in order to enter; that an entry must be sent in with a
payment for a previous purchase (like those travel scams); that the
recipient must make a purchase in order to receive future sweepstakes
mailings; a fake check that has no cash-value and any seal, name or
term that implies a federal government connection, approval or endorsement.
All these old tricks of the trade are now strictly illegal. Contact
the U.S. Postal Inspection Service located at the Operations Support
Group in Chicago if you believe you have been victimized by fraudulent
promotional offers. In addition to government assistance, The Direct
Marketing Association in Washington, DC sponsors the Sweepstakes HelpLine.
This Help-Line may be contacted by e-mail at sweepstakes@the-dma.org
or by calling 202 861-2475.
Next weekly update August 23rd. |
